Nannes trumps over Gayle in Big Bash League encounter
Royal Challengers Bangalore speed merchant Dirk Nannes came out victorious in the clash between his side Melbourne Renegades and Chris Gayle’s Sydney Thunder in their Big Bash League encounter at Stadium Australia in Sydney on Friday.
Bolstered by the inclusion of veteran Brad Hodge, the Renegades got off to a great start after winning the toss and choosing to bat first. With opening partner Aaron Finch, Hodge took the Renegades to 82 in 10 overs before he was dismissed. Finch followed him back in the same over and regular wickets after that saw the Renegades reach only 140/8 in their 20 overs.
Thunder’s reply saw Tim Cruickshank and Gayle taking them to 59 in the 8th over when the former was dismissed for 15 off 22 balls. Usman Khawaja joined him and made 17 off 22 balls before being dismissed in the 15th over with the score on 101. Gayle had been balancing the slow scoring from the other end with his belligerent hitting but Dirk Nannes was hard to score off. The loss of two more wickets in the next two overs at the other end added pressure on Gayle to score quicker.
The 19th over turned the game decisively towards the Renegades as with 19 runs required from 12 balls, Gayle mistimed a pull right into the hands of Nathan Reardon at midwicket. Gayle made 75 off 54 balls with three 4s and five 6s.
At 122/5 with 19 required off 10 balls, Shane Harwood gave only three runs away and took the wicket of Luke Butterworth to end the over, leaving Thunder with 16 required from the last over.
Shaun Tait conceded two fours in his next over but Thunder still needed 7 from the last ball with which he took the wicket of Sean Abbott. Sydney Thunder ended at 134/7, the Renegades sealing the match by 6 runs. Dirk Nannes finished the game wicketless but was extremely miserly, his figures reading 4 overs for just 10 runs.
