NZ vs Ind 2nd Test: Kohli ton helps India salvage draw

Virat Kohli's 6th Test century on Day 5 saved India from what could have been a humiliating defeat at the hands of hosts New Zealand as the 2nd Test at Wellington ended in a draw, sealing the series 1-0 in New Zealand's favour.

It was a Test match to remember for Brendon McCullum, who became the first New Zealander to have scored a Test triple (302), surpassing former Kiwi batsman Martin Crowe's previous best of 299. India fought back with a Virat ton in the 4th innings, which ultimately saved the visitors.

Ishant Sharma starred with 6 wickets in the 1st innings alongside Mohammad Shami who picked up four, as New Zealand were all-out for 192 in just 53 overs. India's response was a huge total of 438, which included important contributions from Shikhar Dhawan (98), MS Dhoni (68) and Ajinkya Rahane (118) who registered his first Test century in New Zealand. Just when the Indians thought they were in control, a spirited Kiwi side turned up to destroy their opponent's hopes.

Brendon McCullum bamboozled the Indian bowlers, who toiled hard for his wicket until he crossed the historic three-figure mark. New Zealand also saw a couple of centuries in the meanwhile, that of BJ Watling (124) and the impressive youngster Jimmy Neesham (137*). Zaheer Khan rattled the top order (5/170), while Shami bagged a couple, but the Kiwis were already running away with the game. They eventually declared at 680/8, setting India a huge task of 435 runs to win the Test.

Chasing an improbable target, the Indians were caught off guard right from the start. Their Top 3 collapsed with just 54 runs on the board. However, it was Kohli who rose to the occasion once again and restored some sanity in the middle, in partnership with Rohit Sharma. The Kiwi bowlers applied tremendous pressure on the batsmen, but it only provoked Kohli (107) who turned aggressive in his shots as he racked up his 6th Test hundred. Sharma (31*) hung on at the other end and at 166/3, India managed to draw the Test match.

New Zealand 192 (Ishant 6-51, Shami 4-70) and 680 for 8 dec. (McCullum 302, Neesham 137*, Watling 124, Zaheer 5-170) drew with India 438 (Rahane 118, Dhawan 98, Dhoni 68, Southee 3-93) and 166 for 3 (Kohli 105*, Southee 2-50)
