Pakistan beat Sri Lanka by 6 wickets in Asia Cup
Pakistan pushed Sri Lanka to the brink of elimination from the Asia Cup, beating them by 6 wickets in their clash at the Shere Bangla Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka on Thursday and taking a bonus point in the process.
Royal Challengers Bangalore allrounder Tillakaratne Dilshan romped to 20 in no time after Sri Lanka chose to bat first, hitting four 4s and targeting Aizaz Cheema. Cheema had his revenge with a short ball which Dilshan top edged to be caught at midwicket, gone for 20 off 20.
Sri Lanka lost 4/65 and 6/23 either side of a 96 run partnership for the 5th wicket between Kumar Sangakkara (71) and Upul Tharanga (57) to slide to 188 all out in just 45.4 overs.
Cheema got the big fish- Jayawardene (12), Dilshan and Sangakkara in addition to Malinga, ending with 4/43. He was well supported by Saeed Ajmal (3/27) and Umar Gul (2/20).
Strikes from Seekkuge Prasanna and Suranga Lakmal saw Pakistan totter to 33/3 but former RCBian and current Pakistan skipper Misbah ul Haq (72*) steadied the innings with Umar Akmal (77).
Misbah and Umar added 152 runs for the 4th wicket, the former dropping anchor and the latter playing his natural aggressive game to bat SL out of the match. Umar was dismissed with just 4 runs needed to win, too late for the Lankans to do anything and Pakistan easily reached 189/4 in 39.5 overs.
The win has nearly put them out of contention for a place in the finals, they now need favourable results in India’s remaining matches against Bangladesh and Pakistan and a win with a bonus point in their game against Bangladesh to proceed further in the tournament.
