Pujara, Tiwary strike fifties in Vijay Hazare Trophy
Royal Challengers Bangalore batsmen Cheteshwar Pujara and Saurabh Tiwary struck fifties in their Vijay Hazare Trophy appearances leading their respective sides this past week.
Cheteshwar Pujara made 80 of his side Saurashtra’s total of 173 against arch rivals Gujarat in their clash at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Pujara alone stood tall for his side, his 80 coming off 126 balls with 3 fours and 3 sixes with support from Chirag Jani (42) at the other end. Post Jani’s dismissal, Pujara ran out of partners and was the last wicket to fall.
Gujarat chased down the total with ease, posting 175/6 in 39.3 overs to win the West Zone match by 4 wickets.
In the East Zone clash between the Saurabh Tiwary led Jharkhand and Orissa played at the Jadavpur University Complex in Kolkata, Tiwary steered his side towards a competitive total of 254 with his innings of 57.
Tiwary’s 57 came off 73 balls with 7 fours as he consolidated the innings first with Subroto Ghosh (48) and then with Kumar Deobrat (72), helping Jharkhand post 254/6. Orissa chased down the total with comparative ease, reaching 255/5 in 42.3 overs for a 5 wicket win.
A third RCB player, newcomer Harshal Patel ended on the winning side when his team Haryana defeated Jammu and Kashmir by 22 runs in their North Zone clash at the Palam A Ground in New Delhi.
Patel made 14 off 20 balls with a six to help Haryana reach 198 but bowled just one over, conceding 7 runs in their successful defence of the meager total.
