Ranji Trophy: Karnataka edge out Haryana
Despite Haryana seamer Harshal Patel's career-best figures of 11-96, Karnataka registered a nervy victory against his side by 3 wickets in the Group A encounter at Lahli on Monday.
Haryana's downfall in the 1st innings was plotted by Stuart Binny, who picked up 3 wickets to unsettle the batsmen, followed by Abhimanyu Mithun (2/40) and HS Sharath (2/68) who worked in tandem as Mithun got rid of centurion Nitin Saini (109). Haryana were bundled out for 247.
Karnataka's response began well with KL Rahul (98) and Mayank Agarwal (42) forging a 91-run 1st wicket stand, until the latter fell to Ashish Hooda. The middle-order began to falter, even as Rahul continued scoring from the other end. Harshal Patel (6/55) then removed Rahul who missed out on a well-deserved ton. CM Gautam (54) made a patient fifty, but wickets around him started falling like nine pins as Patel ran through the lower order. Karnataka were all-out for 256, gaining a slender lead of 9 runs.
Haryana failed to capitalize on this opportunity and were dismissed on 105, courtesy Ronit More's five-wicket haul that ensued the collapse. Karnataka were faced with a target of 97 runs. However, by the end of day 3, they had already lost 4 wickets for a score of 62. On the final day, Karnataka needed just 35 runs with 6 wickets in hand, and were slowly nearing victory. Once again, it was Patel who struck thrice in three overs to reduce the chasing side on 87/7, needing 10 more runs to complete a win. However, Stuart Binny's responsible knock of 31 ensured Karnataka bag their second victory this season.
With 19 points to their tally, Karnataka are currently placed second in Group A.
Brief Scores: Karnataka 256 (Rahul 98, Gautam 54, Harshal 5-46) and 97 for 7 (Binny 31*, Harshal 5-41) beat Haryana 247 (Saini 109, Binny 3-43) and 105 (Dewan 31, More 5-18) by three wickets.
