Ranji Trophy: Karnataka gain on Rahul's ton
KL Rahul smashed an outstanding 158 as Karnataka managed to get past Vidarbha's 1st innings total and collect 3 points in a drawn game at the VCA Stadium in Nagpur.
On Day 1,Vidarbha opted to bat first on a flat track and piled on a massive total of 542, thanks to centuries from opener Faiz Fazal (147) and Shalabh Shrivastava (193). HS Sharath picked four wickets, while Abhimanyu Mithun finished with a couple. Debutant Abrar Kazi and KP Appanna bagged one wicket each. Vidarbha batted for two whole days before they were all-out for 542 in 197.4 overs.
Day 3 witnessed Karnataka starting their response on a strong note with both openers Robin Uthappa (86) and Mayank Agarwal (71) getting to their respective half-centuries. Their 124-run partnership for the 1st wicket was broken as Uthappa departed. However, young KL Rahul displayed exemplary batting as he scored a patient hundred in 259 balls. The youngster batted for 413 minutes before he was clean bowled. Karnataka were reeling at 474/6.
The tail-enders then contributed handsomely to the Karnataka total, especially Ganesh Satish (42), who offered plenty of resistance. But it was the duo of Kazi (25*) and Appanna (32) who added 72 runs for the 9th wicket and put their team in the lead. By the end of Day 4, Karnataka had established a slim lead of 7 runs.
The match ended in a draw but it was Karnataka who benefited with 3 points in the table.
