Ranji Trophy: Nair century revives Karnataka
Karun Nair's terrific knock of 100 late in the innings helped Karnataka recover from an early setback as they went to stumps on Day 1 with 297/5 against Uttar Pradesh in their quarter-final at Bangalore.
UP won the toss and elected to bowl first on Day 1 at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. It wasn't the best of starts for the home team, whose top order collapsed like a pack of cards at the very beginning. Opener KL Rahul, R Samarth and the in-form Manish Pandey were all dismissed on duck. However, Robin Uthappa who opened along side Rahul, held on at one end. Karnataka were 15/3, when Uthappa and Nair together put up 120 crucial runs for the 4th wicket. Uthappa, whose century included 19 fours, was then stumped and the hosts were in a slightly better position at 135/4.
Nair then played a steady innings along with CM Gautam who also scored a vital 89 in the course of the game. Nair's fluent innings of 100 comprised 14 fours and 1 six. However, he fell in the final over, leaving his side in command at the end of the day with Gautam at the crease.
