Ranji Trophy: Pujara hits double century in drawn game
Cheteshwar Pujara slammed a phenomenal double hundred in the Group B fixture between Tamil Nadu and Saurashtra that concluded at Chepauk on Sunday.
After Abhinav Mukund's marathon innings of 240 along with Dinesh Karthik's spledid hundred (133) on Day 1 and 2, Tamil Nadu appeared to confident with a total of 565 on the board. Three of their top order batsmen registered fifties, which indicated that the pitch was slowly easing up for batting. Jaydev Unadkat (4/99) ran through the rest of the batsmen until Tamil Nadu declared with 2 wickets to spare.
Saurashtra's openers fell cheaply and the stage was set for a typical Cheteshwar Pujara knock towards the end of Day 2. From an overnight score of 8, Pujara went on to register his second hundred of the season, along with Jaydev Shah who played a captain's knock to reach his century. Together, the duo added 353 runs for the 4th wicket and remained unbeaten at stumps on Day 3. Saurashtra were 323/3.
The following day, Shah missed his double by just 5 runs, as he departed on 195. Pujara though, moved on from his overnight score of 152 to complete his double hundred and was involved in a 157-run partnership with Aarpit Vasavada (70). By the end of Day 4, Saurashtra had taken a narrow lead of 16 runs and the match ended in a draw.
On the basis of first-innings lead, Saurashtra have gained 3 points in the table.
