Ranji Trophy: Tamil Nadu ride on Mukund's double hundred
Abhinav Mukund registered a first-class double ton as Tamil Nadu dominated proceedings on Day 2 against Saurashtra at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai.
Tamil Nadu, who are yet to win a match this season, were given a green top at Chepauk for favourable results. Though, they lost the toss and were put in to bat in overcast conditions on Day 1. Their openers did a solid job of patiently seeing off the new ball that was swinging in the first hour or so. The Saurashtra seamers were encouraged by the swing on offer, but they failed to make the most of it as Abhinav Mukund and Murali Vijay applied themselves well.
Vijay (62) struck a composed fifty, fending off short balls from the pacers and putting away the bad ones. Mukund, who looked comfortable at the crease, stitched a 1st wicket 97-run stand with Vijay. Post Vijay's dismissal, the southpaw went on to add another 97 runs with S Badrinath (56) for the 2nd wicket. In the meanwhile, he completed his 19th first-class hundred and Tamil Nadu finished with 268/2 at stumps on Day 1, with Mukund unbeaten on 103.
Day 2 began with Saurashtra's search for early wickets, which resulted in Baba Aparajith's dismissal on 50. But at other end, Mukund marched on to convert his hundred into a deserving double century that took Tamil Nadu past a score of 500. He was well supported by Dinesh Karthik (133), who also brought up his century alongside, before falling to Jaydev Unadkat. From 508/3 at Tea, Tamil Nadu collapsed and eventually declared at 565/8. Mukund was dismissed on 240 (20x4, 1x6). Unadkat finished with impressive figures of 4/99.
