Ranji Trophy: Zaheer takes honours in drawn game
Pacer Zaheer Khan picked his 650th first-class wicket and 34th five-wicket haul as the Mumbai-Delhi encounter ended in a draw on Sunday at the Bandra Kurla Complex, Mumbai.
Half-centuries in the top order propelled Mumbai to a total of 324 in the first innings after they won the toss and elected to bat. Siddhesh Lad top-scored with 74, but it was skipper Zaheer who took everyone by surprise with a 50-ball 51 towards the end, reviving his side's batting.
Delhi responded well in their 1st innings, as Gautam Gambhir (64) slammed a fifty at the top, along with Mithun Manhas' splendid hundred (113). However, an outstanding spell of swing bowling from Zaheer (5/88) put Delhi in deep trouble as they lost wickets at regular intervals. With Zaheer from one end and Javed Khan (3/73) from the other, the visitors couldn't go past the Mumbai total and ended up leveling their first innings score.
Mumbai's 2nd innings began on a bad note as they lost veteran Wasim Jaffer on a duck. Young Aditya Tare then put his foot forward, scoring a blazing 122 alongside Lad (85) who was once again among the runs. Abhishek Nayar (60) chipped in as well, and Mumbai were on course for a huge total. They declared at 347/6.
Chasing 348 on Day 4, Delhi were boosted by a century from opener Unmukt Chand (106) and Gambhir's consecutive half-century (51). In the absence of Gambhir who retired hurt on 2, Virender Sehwag (35) joined Chand at the crease, but it wasn't enough to take Delhi even halfway. At stumps, the Delhi innings ended on 198/0, resulting in a draw.
Both Mumbai and Delhi have grabbed a point each in the 3rd Round. The former are placed on top, alongside Gujarat with 13 points in Group A.
