RC lose opener, not heart

RC lose opener, not heart
Royal Challengers vs Kolkata Knightriders: Eden Gardens

RC Editor

It was not the start Team Royal Challengers was looking for. Losing the first match in IPL 2010 to Kolkata Knightriders by seven wickets is surely a disappointing thing. But a format which allows and encourages comebacks, there are lots to look forward to and take lessons from the defeat.

The batting, for instance. The hours of practice now has to be transformed into some meaty something in the IPL matches. I remember (and wrote that too) how Eoin Morgan was practicing the reverse sweep vigorously under specific instructions from Coach Ray. On match day, Morgan succumbed while trying to play that very shot. Practice makes a man perfect. Perhaps, today was not the day to be perfect.

It happens in cricket. You can have some bad days in office. Team Royal Challengers have many things to fix tonight besides the batting. The bowling seemed a little toothless. The fielding has rooms for improvement.

It would have been another story if Rahul Dravid didn’t drag the ball from way outside the off-stump to the stumps. That partnership for the fifth wicket was the most crucial moment of the match for Team RC. It could have been easily 160 had the two stayed for another four overs, but lets not spill our energies on what “could have been”, rather lets concentrate on what “should be” in the next matches.

Team RC should take heart from the way Kallis batted today – sensible, with controlled aggression. Had he been reckless in the beginning, RC would have folded up within a much thinner scoreline.

The need of the hour is to find the momentum. In 20-20, it’s momentum that can define how you tread in a tournament like IPL. Team RC is looking to find it quickly, perhaps March 16, Tuesday will be the day when they face Kings XI Punjab in Bangalore.

Brief Scores:

Royal Challengers: 135/7 in 20 overs (Kallis 65, Mathews 4/19)
Kolkata Knightriders: 136/3 in 19.2 overs (Brad Hodge 50, Manoj Tiwary 50)

Kolkata wins by seven wickets.

we need good start from batsmen, they hav to utilize the powerplay overs, atlest 50 runs in 6 overs . dravid has to keep his wicket till the end. manish and virat is the key of success for rc,jumbo come on we hav very good players especially very strong batting line up, even dale steyn can send the ball out the park(when he’s batting not when he’s bowling)... try to score 175+ in all the matches and pick up some early wickets..GO CHALLENGERS GO

My team for tomorrow-
Kallis
Goswami
Pandey
Dravid
Morgan
Kohli
Merwe
Praveen
Vinay Kr
Dillon Du Preez
Anil Kumble
Sad to leave out Uthappa just for the reason that Goswami deserves some chances on the back of his strong domestic performance.

has anyone noticed this?????............yesterday the kkr were 102 for noloss after 11 overs dat means they needed onlu about 35 runs….but kumble n merwe took d mach till the last over of the match…........this shows we have quality spinners and can restrict the total if we do not conceed more runs in powerplay….........we are the best team in ipl frnz we will bonce back for sure…....... i think kkr will get thrashed for sure tom frm chni sprkings….........best of luck jumbo we all r der wid u we can rok d bangalore stadium tom…......rcb rocks

RCB definitely needs to improve in POWER PLAY overs…

Posted by vinaygowda on 03/15  at  04:27 PM

It feels great to see and feel the passion our fans have for the team. Yes, we have the right to be angry, frustrated, break some glasses or some chairs (I hope nobody went that far!!). But that’s what a passionate person do when you swear by your team.

I share this passion, anger, frustration with all the fans. But we need to do some anger-management here. We know cricket is a funny game. You are beaten all square one day, but next day you return and play like a champion. Just take Deccan Charger as an example in the last two matches they played this IPL. Need I explain more?

Yes, we were outplayed at the Eden. Things were planned, but didnt go well in the field. There were mistakes, there were failures. But one match doesnt decide the fate of the tournament. Last year we came back strongly after 5 straight losses and reached the finals.

Cricket is a game of glorious uncertainties. We fielded the best team under the circumstances. No team plays to lose. And moreover as Dravid said, “20-20 cricket is a game of having momentum and a little bit of luck.” We will have the momentum with us, and luck will automatically follow.

Keep the faith, we will bounce back!!!

cheers !!

Dravid should come at 1 down . He is key player for RCB, if Rahul had bat in num.3 yesterday then we could give good challenging score to KKR.
in bowling take mithun or vinay instead of goswami, already we had option as uthappa. Kumble should start bowling after first power play.
RCB should open with Kallis and uthapa, then
Dravid
Pandey
Morgan
Vander merve or White(should be if he present in next match)
Kohli
Boucher
Praveen Kumar
vinay or Mithun
Kumble

we need taylor and KP as early as possible.

Posted by ravindrachallenger on 03/15  at  03:26 PM

RCB lacks explosive opener and even confidence. The kind of batting by Goswami and Manish in yesterdays match was disappointing.Kallis is a good batsmen but not a good opener in T20 format. From past 2 seasons we havent seen any aggresive opening. And we need 5 full time bowler and one all rounder. In yesterdays match RCB was short of one bowler because if either Kallis or any other main bowler got injuired then it will be a greate trouble to complete 20 overs bowling.

Posted by Rakki on 03/15  at  02:09 PM

when is ross taylor joining team…........ we need him very badly…. keeper should be changed…

Posted by sahel on 03/15  at  01:09 PM

Our biggest weakness lies in our bowling and the absence of a quality all rounder. We cannot keep playing with Kallis as our 5th bowling option. No other choice but to play only 2 among uthappa, manish and goswami and the third place to Vinay Kumar/bhuwaneswar kr/mithun. We should also give chances to Dillon Du Preez instead of Steyn.

Posted by ashu8198 on 03/15  at  01:04 PM

yesterdays team was good but it was just that the plan was not gud,the eefort put in by players was not the best.the batting struggled, the bowling struggledand even fielders.look how deccan chargers batted, bowled and fieled after their first loss.so bangalore should also perform well next time.
yesterdays batting order was hopeless
it should had been:
kallis
robbie
they two should open then
if gud start
eoin morgan
virat
pandey
goswami
dravid
merwe
praveen
dale
kumble
if start is not gud then
dravid
virat
morgan
pandey
goswami
merwe
praveen
dale
kumble
this is best for rcb otherwise if they want a change in team then my other team would be keeping out goswami as he niether batted well nor did wicket keeping well.then introducing vinay or mithun in place of dale.
kallis
robbie
dravid
virat
morgan
pandey
boucher
merwe
praveen
vinay/mithun
kumble

Very disappointed with opening comination..and batting order…......Hope v win next match in Home pitch….......

Posted by Nanju-Kumar on 03/15  at  10:30 AM

Its just the first match.. and RC did not have enough practice! Its okay we can back strong against Kings 11 punjab!! We have to stay focused… Don’t worry RC.. our support is always with you..

I think we must bowl first and chase it down and also think about a good opening pair..
anyways best of luck for the rest of the season

Posted by Snehal-Bull on 03/15  at  10:16 AM

It is more than obvious that yesterday we missed our 2 muscles. If we go back and look at the game, we’ll see that the youngsters never tried playing their natural game. They all tried to score quick which is actually not their job. You’d expect your hitters to do that. And both our hitters are unavailable at the moment. If we see, the likes of Pandey, Uthappa and Goswami got out to ‘slog’ shots. Pandey is a class act and slogging is not his area. Goswami too tried to up the pace of the innings but he just lacked the muscle to do it. We have a fantastic team at the moment undoubtedly, but we lack the firepower in the line up. We can score a 160 but I doubt if we can reach that power score 180.

Posted by Ayush-Dhurka on 03/15  at  10:10 AM

Best Opening comb would be Kallis-Utthappa / Kallis-Morgan / Morgan-Uthappa. First down should be Dravid. None other can take first down pressure.

Posted by DJV on 03/15  at  09:22 AM

Truly we have lost opener, not heart>> i am with surya. RCB lacks an explosive opener right from 1st IPL. We dont take benefit of the first 6 overs.. we still havent managed 50+ runs in the first 6 overs yet, when almost every other ipl team has done that(atleast once)...Send Uttappa & Manish to open . Let them play their natural game. followed by JK,RD,Morgan, kohli….we will be back with a bang!!!!ALDeBEST

Posted by bhojRAJ on 03/15  at  02:34 AM

The loss of this match is totally lack of batting. I dont understand in sending Kallis & Goswami to open the innings. Send Uttappa & Manish to open . Let them play their natural game. The rest players can add to the total. Today Kallis played a 50 over match innings. Best Team option was ( As per today’s selection)
Uttappa
Manish
Kohli
Dravid
Kallis
Boucher
Morgan
Merve
P Kumar
Steyn
Kumble

Any way past is past. Let us start with fresh on the New Year ( Ugadi)

I agree with u Surya…we dont have any solid openers…but still the best combination with the current players would be Uthappa n Kallis… Y dont they try with Kallis ( In my view actually he is not needed but we are in short of 4 foreign players, So no way) down the order, I think RD can do more than what he did if he comes as a opener.Vander Merve is bowling well he can be tested as Pinch hitter, Frankly saying his blind shots wont be useful down the order, they can be advantageous under the power play, anyways we are having Boucher n Kumar down the order…. So Kumble n Rennings revise the entire things for the next game…..Think as a competitor….

Posted by ReyMys on 03/15  at  12:06 AM

Robbie is the guy who must open the innings!!! he cant handle a lot of pressure but surely if he settles in which needs a bit more time he will for sure tear apart the opposition!!!! and wat was dravid doing batting at No 5??? we should have sent him at No 3 after goswami got out cos we needed experience there!!!! dravid would have held the innings together and the younger players during the later half could have concentrated on run rate!!!! 160 on dat pitch was a gud score!! never mind no use of “if’s and but’s” now we ll be back with a bang!!!!

Posted by fearlessfighters on 03/15  at  12:03 AM

I must blame Rennigs and Kumble for this defeat…his batting order selection is entirely wrong,They depended much on the unexperienced young Indian batsmen.Dravid should come up the order, Uthappa should have come as Opener, We really dont have a solid aggressive openers, Vander Merwe shoud have tested as a pinch hitter if we loose early wickets, Steyn should have excluded and Boucher to be Included and Akhil Should have Replaced Goswami….Anyways Well played JAK and RD…. At least in the next match promote RD up the order, The team should be in the order
Uthappa
Kallis
Dravid
Morgan
Kohli
Boucher
vander Merwe ( can be placed in One down if early wicket falls)
Praveen Kumar
Kumble
Akhil
Mithun/Pandey (Depending upon the pitch conditions)

and remember one more thing, Never open bowling with Kallis, his not a good bowler under Power play conditions. We are seriously missing quality bowler, Domestic players should strive hard to fill the gap.We are really missing Ross Taylor, If Taylor is there then Taylor and Morgan combination would be outstanding. And Morgan dont do any experiments in the early stages of the innings,The scoring shot he played made me to hope for the win but soon after his reverse sweep disappointed me too…The problem with Kallis is that even if he scores runs he is not giving any momentum to the scoreboard, So after returing of the remaining players like Pietersen,White n Smith, JAK should be kept out as his bowling is also not impressive. All the best RD for next game…U Rock…..

RCB lacks an explosive opener right from 1st IPL.

Every team has atleast 1.

DC-Gilly,Gibbs
CSK-Hayden
KXIP-Marsh,Bopara
DDD-Sehwag,Gauti
MI-Sachin,Jayasuriya
KKR-Mccullum, Gayle
RR-Smith,Asnodkar

All these openers are explosive.
An explosive opener at the top is must.

Now whom does RCB have ?

Why cant Jennings/Kumble realize this and sign some top order bat instead of Steven Smith as replacement for Ryder. Both Merwe and Smith are same type of players. Why the hell do we need another 1 ?

and why did we go with only 5 bowlers ? Is Kallis an all rounder ?? Shame to see Tiwary scoring heavily against him. The batting department has no firepower except Morgan and Dravid.

Until White/Pietersen/Taylor arrives, we can forget about winning.

C’mon Kumble,

this India, not South Africa…

Posted by surya-y on 03/14  at  11:33 PM

why are we not taking JAK into the team… I mean give him some chances atleast.. As far as I know, he has just got one chance in the two seasons .. give him an opportunity..

Though we have lost the match we played well specially kallis. He played very well today. As we were present there as Mighty 14 Winner from Kolkata we enjoy the match but some moments are really bad for me specially Dravid’s Out. KKR Fans through lots of Water packet towards us. We didn’t expect that from them as we are also from Kolkata. Though we are divided by Teams but we are United by Cricket.

Thanks anisha for selecting Me.It’s one of my best day in my life.

Thanks RCB. Hope we will rock in the Next Match.

Best of Luck for the Upcoming Games.

had heard same sort of blogs written by you earlier which sounded very much charged up and motivating. which never showed up in the team’s performance. a loss wouldn’t have bothered if they had challenged the opposition as win and loss is part of game. atleast if they had lived up to what their team name meant. how would u justify goswami’s inclusion who never till date looked on top of the ball. n about the bowling, our bowling looks very much depleted and predefined(only 5 bowlers) so the opposition will have exact plan chalked for each. n we’re not posing any surprising challenge if one of the bowler takes beating or injured or low on morale. nobody is their to replace him. I may not be cricketing expert. but this sounds common sense right. we being fans backing our beloved team expect them fight back atleast, leave alone winning. i expect a reply to this. which tells, atleast u people value our comments and take our expectation forward to the team. if you’re not replying, please stop this site and your hopeless blog. we need action not words. sorry to be harsh in my words. i am deeply hurt by there performance.

kallis u are sensible .......... robin uthaapa u are useless and plz change that wicket keeper he dont know to bat and also the wicket keeping if he take the ball and made the runout of tiwari then the match scene will be changed .......... u donea big lose ............ but dont worry come back soon with bang .......... all the best for next match…..

Posted by phenix on 03/14  at  10:03 PM

Bad loss. Lost in all departments of the game. The first 6 overs were key and we lost it right there (both when we were batting and bowling). Kallis did play a good knock but you cannot expect someone to play all 20 overs and score just 65 runs. Need momentum. Agreed that he did not get support the other end. Manish Pandey just looked clueless and Sreevats knew just one shot to play. What was he trying? IPL is a longer format and we have a long way to go. We need to re-group quickly and start performing across all departments. I am sure we will do it. Wait and watch…we are going to come back with a bang grin

kallis sure batted but always saying if he didnt bat that way, we would have lost more miserably, isnt exactly the way forward… instead, we need to make sure we have batsmen who not only bat sensibly but also score a bit quickly… 2 Seasons of IPL and we still havent managed 50+ runs in the first 6 overs yet, when almost every other ipl team has done that(atleast once)... I dont see any other indicator of where we need to start improving..
