RCB spoils from IPL 5
Royal Challengers Bangalore batsmen AB de Villiers and Chris Gayle were among the players who received prizes for their performance in IPL 5 on Sunday night at Chennai.
After Kolkata Knight Riders picked up the trophy beating Chennai Super Kings by 5 wickets to win the final, Chris Gayle was awarded the Orange Cap while AB de Villiers won the prize for the power performance of the tournament.
Chris Gayle made a world record 733 runs in the tournament at an average of 61.08 with a strike rate of 160.74, a highest score of 128* and seven fifties to his name. Gayle also hit 59 sixes in the tournament, just one less than the three next batsmen in the list– DD’s Kevin Pietersen, DC’s Cameron White and CSK’s Dwayne Bravo (20 sixes each) put together.
AB de Villiers’s hurricane knock of 47 off 17b against Deccan Chargers at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru won him the Volkswagen Power Performer award, a Volkswagen Vento signed by all the IPL captains and a cash award. His swashbuckling innings included 23 runs off an over from the world’s best fast bowler Dale Steyn.
de Villiers’s knock was favoured by 16.5 % of the voters on the official IPL website, that is nearly 80,214 votes out of a total of 486,146 votes recorded. Chris Gayle’s 128* against the Delhi Daredevils came in second with 14.1% of the votes, 68,546 votes in all.
RCB manager Avinash Vaidya accepted the award on their behalf.
