South Africa take lead with 9 wicket win
South Africa took a 1-0 lead in the 3 Test series against New Zealand with a 9 wicket win in the second Test at Seddon Park in Hamilton today.
Vernon Philander picked up a match haul of 10/114 and the man of the match award. Royal Challengers Bangalore batsman-wicketkeeper AB de Villiers played his part with a 83 in the first innings which helped SA take a crucial first innings lead.
Resuming from his overnight score of 0* RCB skipper Daniel Vettori contributed 21 in his partnership of 35 with Kane Williamson for the fifth wicket before he became the first wicket to fall in the morning, caught behind off Kallis. NZ’s lead was only a paltry 31 at the time.
Williamson took his score from 41* to 77, adding 42 for the sixth wicket with Kruger van Wyk (20) before Philander removed both in successive overs. Morkel removed Bracewell before Philander returned to clean up Mark Gillespie and Chris Martin, ending the NZ second innings on 168 with the lead at exactly a hundred. Philander finished with 6/44.
Bracewell removed Peterson with his first ball in the fourth innings with SA on 5 but Graeme Smith (55*) and Hashim Amla (46) calmly carried SA to 103/1 at a fairly good clip to finish the chase within 19.5 overs.
