Team RC ready to take Capital City

By Vikram Afzulpurkar

Well, the team got up relatively early since they were not tired from any travelling (one must actually thank the ICC World Cup 2011 organisers who really showed how to space out events) and hit breakfast straight up, barring one or two members that may have gone to the gym pre breakfast. For the others, breakfast was first on the agenda.

As usual the exclusive breakfast area was ‘missed out’ by the players themselves although many senior players order it in their rooms. It’s not often that one reads the introduction letters from the hotel management which specify where the breakfast is. So, instead team members casually wandered into the breakfast on the ground floor, next to the lifts. Dilshan was seen drifting before somebody clarified that he would ideally go to another floor. But of the course, the attendant at the restaurant’s door was cordial enough to offer him the meal anywhere.

Well, the team got up relatively early since they were not tired from any travelling (one must actually thank the ICC World Cup 2011 organisers who really showed how to space out events) and hit breakfast straight up, barring one or two members that may have gone to the gym pre breakfast.

The half hour before the team departed for practice in the evening was allotted by manager Avinash Vaidya to interviewers from news channels and newspapers. Then left the bus.

At the nets, Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers took strike early and today, everybody seemed to be practicing their long hits. As usual coach Ray took players aside and decided to test their reflex catching. Dan Vettori preferred to go the smaller ground outside the Kotla which has a ‘nets’ area. He was followed by Asad Pathan, all padded up and raring to go.

Syed Mohammed meanwhile sweated it out, bowling in his near perfect left arm orthodox action and making batsmen think. Several local net bowlers were of course pressed into service. Venkatesh Prasad asked Langeveldt, Johan van der Wath, Mithun, Arvind and Bharath Narayan to bowl in the other nets where he maintained a close watch.

From Mithun and Arvind, it’s nice to hear these boys, who incidentally maintain very healthy eating habits and abstinence, call Venkatesh Prasad ‘Sir.’ Well, lads like Saurabh Tiwary anyway call most cricketers of Tendulkar’s age group ‘Sir.’ The respect for older players lives on to good effect in the glorious traditions of our ancestors.

Virat Kohli changed batting nets and took a small break sitting alongside Zaheer Khan. However, he wanted more and therefore asked the strength and conditioning coach Basu to perform some throw-downs. Night dawned soon and the team management realized they would not be able to keep their appointment for 9 pm at the hotel for a meet and greet function with invitees. Half an hour later would do.

The function held its promise in the aspect of quality food to follow after the customary photo shoot. An outdoor environment helped lighten the mood and the cricketers, though segregated by a row of tables and bodyguards seemed to be in a relaxed mood.

Then the diligent Team RC cricketers promptly retired for the night around 10:15 pm to be well rested for the match. High voltage practice from the RCBians would put them at a considerable advantage against the hosts. Tuesday evening would tell.
