Team spirit is the essence: de Villiers
“I can compare it (Team Royal Challengers) to the South African international team. I’ve played a lot of cricket and I know that the teams that do well are always the teams that have a good team spirit.” These are the words of the AB de Villiers. After a workout at the Chinnaswamy stadium, de Villiers left nothing hidden while giving some quotable quotes. “I couldn’t have picked a better side – the staff, the management, my team-mates are all lovely blokes. We’re really looking forward to playing together and to get out on the park and do well. The team spirit is very good.”

Earlier, Chief coach Ray Jennings had also stressed upon team spirit as the essence of success. De Villiers just reiterated the same, “We had a nice team meeting today with Anil Kumble, the chief mentor). I’ve got lots of respect for him. He’s going to make a lot of decisions and work really closely with the boys. It’s great to have him around as a mentor, just for that little extra bit of confidence in the field,” he said while talking to reporters.
But more than anything else, de Villiers would like to finish in the right side of IPL this time. The previous two IPL his exploits with Delhi Daredevils couldn’t bear the desired results, but this time, the Protean is upbeat about hitting the jackpot. “'I’ve got a good feeling about the tournament this year. With all the talent we’ve got, I can’t see a reason why we shouldn’t win it.” He further added, “I would like to do well and like to win games for Team RC – that’s why I was picked.”
But what about the work load? Having to keep wickets and then shouldering the batting responsibilities are never easy jobs. But de Villiers quipped in the contrary, “Its ironic that is I get injured more often in the field than with the keeping. My back takes more strain when fielding. Most people think I shouldn’t keep because of my back, but it’s actually the other way round.”
Commenting on the strong South African connection Team RC has, de Villiers was more upcoming with a positive outcome this IPL. “The previous team couldn’t win the trophy, so hopefully we can change something in that line.”
Hopefully that will cheer the Team RC fans more than anything else.
