Tiwary ton puts East Zone ahead
Saurabh Tiwary converted his overnight score of 84* into a solid 145 to put East Zone ahead on Day 2 of their Duleep Trophy semifinal against South Zone at Visakhapatnam on Monday.
Tiwary extended his 7th wicket partnership with Basant Mohanty from 121 to 153 in the morning before Abhimanyu Mithun dismissed Mohanty. East Zone’s tail provided Tiwary valuable support, giving him the chance to reach 145 (267b, 4x17, 6x2) and guide his team to a respectable total. He was the last wicket to fall with the team on 267.
Mithun finished with 4/68, Stuart Binny with 3/46, Aushik Srinivas with 1/25, taking the four wickets to fall on Day 2 between them. Vinay Kumar (1/45) and KP Appanna (1/40) failed to add to their wickets tally from Day 1.
South Zone openers Robin Uthappa (40) and Abhinav Mukund (19) took them to 69 for no loss before a mini collapse saw them go down to 71/3. Manish Pandey (31) and Amit Verma added 44 for the fourth wicket before wickets off consecutive deliveries for Biplab Samantray (3/22) left them at 115/5.
CM Gautam (4*) and Verma (22*) took the team to 134/5 at Stumps on Day 2, still 133 runs behind the East Zone first innings total.
