U-19 World Cup: India survive low-scoring thriller

After being reduced to 22/5 at one stage, India Under-19s came back with a spirited performance to register a 5-wicket win over Scotland Under-19s in the Group A encounter of the ICC Under-19 World Cup in Dubai on Monday.

Led by youngster Vijay Zol, India opened their World Cup campaign with a 40-run victory over arch rivals Pakistan on Saturday, in what was a run fest of sorts. However, their second outing was a juicy, low-scoring contest. After electing to bat first, Scotland Under-19s could hardly manage to face the Indian bowlers. Kuldeep Yadav registered a historic hat-trick, and he was ably supported by Aamir Gani who bagged 4 wickets, wrapping up Scotland's innings for a poor total of 88 runs inside 30 overs.

One would have expected the run-chase to be a cakewalk for a batting-heavy side like India. But the Scottish bowlers had a surprise for India's batsmen as they ran through the top order in no time. With 5 batsmen back in the hut for just 22 runs, the target suddenly looked steep for India. However, Sarfaraz Khan came out all guns blazing with his unbeaten knock of 45 (5 fours, 1 six), alongside Deepak Hooda (24) who stitched a 57-run partnership to take India through the final hurdle in the 23rd over.

India Under-19s will face Papua New Guinea Under-19s in their next Group A game at Sharjah on Wednesday.
