Cometh the moment, cometh the man!

VVS Laxman has always been Very Very Special for India. On Saturday, he proved again, why he is regarded despicable by the opponent bowlers, and after each such innings, he is regarded more in world cricket. Laxman’s belligerent century and his stand of 109 runs with Sachin Tendulkar paved the way for India to win the third Test and restore parity in the series.

The win, by 5 wickets, proved India’s top billing in Test cricket. The ease, at which Laxman negotiated Suraj Randiv’s spin on a crumbling wicket, was a treat to watch. The situation required stealing singles more than the crushing boundaries, the timing strokes than the big hits. The experienced pair of Laxman and Tendulkar took 48 singles in their 109-run partnership and never let the Lankan spinners dominate the proceedings.

Tendulkar’s departure, in the hands of Randiv, raised Lankan’s hopes, but was again dashed by Laxman’s stoic approach. He kept his cool and timed the ball well to thwart any pressure. In an unbeaten partnership of 86 runs with Suresh Raina (unbeaten 41), Laxman not only accomplished his 16th century, but more importantly took India to victory. His cool composure and delectable style, even when back spasm hit him, was too hot to handle for the Lankans, who could do nothing but to surrender.

The third Test proved again the importance of a worthy pitch for the bowlers to extract something and for the batsmen to play their natural game. It was a test of skills and cooling nerves. India, with more experience to back them up, won the Test eventually.
