Vettori recalled to New Zealand’s Test squad

Former New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori may make a comeback to Test cricket as the replacement for first choice spinner Bruce Martin who was ruled out of the remainder of New Zealand’s tour of England after suffering a calf injury.

Former New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori may make a comeback to Test cricket as the replacement for first choice spinner Bruce Martin who was ruled out of the remainder of New Zealand’s tour of England after suffering a calf injury.

Vettori, who himself struggled with an Achilles heel injury, was only originally included in the New Zealand One day side for the upcoming Champions Trophy.

New Zealand coach Mike Hesson confirmed that there was a good chance of Vettori playing the second test in Leeds on Friday provided he passed the fitness test.

Hesson also said that Vettori won’t be pushed into the Test if not fit, but the team definitely needs him at this moment, considering New Zealand’s heavy 170 run defeat in the first Test at Lords.

Vettori last played a test match in July 2012, against the West Indies in Antigua and also featured in last year’s T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka.

Vettori has 360 wickets in Tests, second only to the legendary Richard Hadlee (431 wickets) in the history of New Zealand cricket.
