Vijay Zol takes West Zone to Deodhar final
Vijay Zol cracked 75 in West Zone’s successful chase against South Zone in the second semi final of the 2012-13 Deodhar Trophy at the Nehru Stadium in Guwahati on Tuesday.
Put in to bat first, South Zone’s batsmen were tested by accurate bowling from West Zone’s Munaf Patel (2/48), Jaydev Unadkat (1/49) and Abhishek Nayar (2/49). South Zone captain Dinesh Karthik tried to stem a collapse with a 45 run stand for the fifth wicket with Sachin Baby after they had been reduced to 98/4 in 23 overs. Kerala’s Sachin Baby (58) and Stuart Binny (65) repaired the innings with an 87 run stand for the sixth wicket, helping South Zone eventually post a total of 258/8 in their 50 overs.
18 year old Vijay Zol anchored defending champions West Zone’s innings, hanging in despite the early loss of Parthiv Patel and Manprit Juneja courtesy strikes from Abhimanyu Mithun and Vinay Kumar respectively. Zol and Ambati Rayudu stabilized the chase, rescuing the team from 26/2 with a 61 run partnership for the third wicket. Rayudu’s dismissal brought in Yusuf Pathan who proceeded to superbly attack the South Zone bowlers. The approach rubbed off on Zol who had already compiled his 50 by then. Zol took a four and a six off his RCB teammate Sandeep Warrier before hitting a Vinay Kumar (2/50) delivery straight into the hands of the fielder at point.
Pathan raced to his 50 off 43b and West Zone kept knocking the runs off at a good pace, Kedar Jadhav keeping up the onslaught at the other end. Pathan finally fell for 68 (53b, 8x4, 2x6), caught off Abhimanyu Mithun (2/45) in the covers. Jadhav ensured the team kept sprinting towards the target, bringing up his 50 off just 34b.
West Zone eventually reached the target with 5 wickets still in hand, posting 259/5 in just 41.1 overs. Vijay Zol was declared Man of the Match for his 75 (88b, 11x4, 1x6).
The team will face North Zone in the final of the tournament on March 13th at Guwahati.
