Vinay, Kohli help India win

India vs Zimbabwe: First T20 International

It took a Royal Challenger to alter the fortunes of the Indian team in the Zimbabwe tour. Vinay Kumar spearheaded a fantastic comeback by the Indian bowlers in their path to redemption in the first of the two T20 matches against the host team. Faced with criticism for lacklustre bowling performances in the just concluded Tri Nation series, Vinay took the lead in vanquishing the Zimbabwe batting order taking 3/24 and thus restricting the hosts to a paltry total of 111. Vinay was ably supported by Ashok Dinda and the other spinners.

Brief Scores:

Zimbabwe: 111/9 in 20 overs (Vinay Kumar 3/24)
India: 112/4 in 15 overs (Kohli 26*, Yusuf Pathan 37)

India wins by 6 wickets

India however made heavy weather of the chase losing the top four batsmen for 48 runs at one stage. Another Royal Challenger, Virat Kohli, who made T20 debut for India, then cooled things and settled down with big hitter Yusuf Pathan to seal the victory without any further damage. The 64 runs partnership between the two for the fifth wicket rescued India to a comfortable 6 wickets victory with 5 overs to spare, but had Zimbabwe posted a par total of around 160 on this ground, it would have been an interesting match in the end.

But, all’s well that ends well. But India still has more to worry than to rejoice. The top batting order are yet to deliver the goods – a matter of concern before India goes into the second match of the series on Sunday.
