Vinay Kumar in Champions Trophy squad
The Indian squad for next month’s Champions Trophy tournament in England has been announced with Vinay Kumar being one of the inclusions.
Vinay Kumar has taken 18 wickets so far in the ongoing Indian Premier League and has been instrumental in RCB’s solid run in the tournament so far, thanks to his crafty bowling in crucial stages. Vinay Kumar’s last India call up was during the ODI tour in Sri Lanka, which he unfortunately missed due to a hamstring injury. Vinay Kumar may have been picked along with four other pacers (Ishant Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Irfan Pathan and Umesh Yadav), largely due to the swing friendly bowling conditions in England.
The biggest surprise is definitely the exclusion of Gautam Gambhir and Yuvraj Singh, with Murali Vijay and Dinesh Karthik being preferred over the two experienced batsmen.
Shikhar Dhawan has also been included, thanks to his recent exploits against the Aussies, and Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja make up for the other specialist batsmen in the squad.
Ravichandran Ashwin and Amit Mishra are the two specialist spinners in the squad. India take on South Africa in the tournament opener at Cardiff on the 6th of June.
India are placed in Group B, along with South Africa, West Indies and arch rivals Pakistan, whereas Group A consists of England, Australia, Newzealand and Srilanka. The top two teams from each group faceoff in the semi-finals on 19thJune (Kennington Oval) and 20th June (Sophia Gardens), with the final to take place on 23rd June at Edgbaston.
