Virat Kohli smashes second Test ton
Virat Kohli struck his second Test hundred, his first in India on Day 3 of the 2nd Test against New Zealand at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore on Sunday.
Kohli carried on from his overnight score of 93* to bring up his century off 187b with a four off Trent Boult in the third over of the day. Skipper Dhoni had brought up his half century earlier in the over.
Tim Southee then mustered up an excellent spell in which he dismissed Kohli (103, 193b, 4x14, 6x1) and Dhoni (62, 94b, 4x8, 2x6) in successive overs before dismissing both Zaheer Khan (7, 5b, 6x1) and Pragyan Ojha (0) in the same over to reduce India to 320/9 from their overnight score of 283/5. Southee eventually finished with 7/64. R Ashwin (32, 40b, 4x5) and Umesh Yadav (4) frustrated the NZ bowlers to reduce India’s deficit from 45 to 12, taking India to 353 before they were bowled out.
New Zealand’s batsmen were less resolute than they were in the first innings but did enough to frustrate the Indian bowlers. Umesh Yadav (2/68) got India the initial breakthroughs with the wickets of the openers. Then the spinners came into action, accounting for the entire middle order between Ojha (2/49) and Ashwin (5/69). NZ were 232/9 at Stumps on Day 3, leading India by 244.
