We are not chokers any more: de Villiers

It will be an arduous task to shed the “chokers” tag for South Africa, but AB de Villiers think that the team is at right corner to prove the critics wrong this time. According to reports published, Royal Challenger de Villiers said, ‘We've shown recently that we can play in big situations and under pressure,” at the team's open media session here in Chennai. “We are not focusing on what happened in the past. We have a different look now. In recent times we have been the opposite of chokers. ICC tournaments are different, there is pressure in the knockouts but we will be ready for it.”

De Villiers may be right in saying so. SA won against Pakistan 3-2 and then came from behind to stave of Indian challenger with the same margin. How did SA conquer own fears? “We have more than enough flair, I don't want us to be the unpredictable side of the tournament and I think we are at the level where we can read situations and adapt,” was de Villiers reasoning.

On personal front, it will be a challenging task for de Villiers, who will be doubling up as a wicket-keeper. “It will be physically challenging for me, but it's for the good of the team and I have been preparing well,” he said. As Marc Boucher was not picked for the side, de Villiers’ wicket keeping ability will be tested in a tournament as important as the World Cup while his batting will be the most important thing that SA may need this time.

The strongest team will triumph in this world cup, de Villiers believes. “A strong team culture and putting up a united front will be cornerstone of this world cup. Well, South Africa will definitely be hoping for that.
