West Indies beat England by 15 runs
Chris Gayle smashed 58 (35b, 4x6, 6x4), took a catch and 1/27 for the West Indies in their Super 8 game against England at Pallekele on Thursday night.
Gayle and Johnson Charles added 103 for the first wicket in just 11 overs after Darren Sammy won the toss and chose to bat first. Gayle feasted on the slow left arm wares of Samit Patel while Charles (84, 56b, 4x10, 6x3) attacked Graeme Swann after both had hit the pacers out of the attack.
Regular wickets after Gayle’s dismissal though saw England restrict West Indies to 179/5 in their 20 overs.
Ducks from Craig Kieswetter and Luke Wright left England on 0/2 after 3 balls in their chase. Alex Hales and Jonny Bairstow repaired the innings painstakingly, England only reaching 29/2 at the end of their powerplay overs. Chris Gayle broke the 55 run partnership when Kieron Pollard pulled off an astounding catch at long on to send Bairstow (18) back, bringing Eoin Morgan to the middle.
Hales responded by going for his shots and Morgan’s instant offensive at the other end brought England back into the game. Hales reached his 50 off 36b and Eoin Morgan brought up his 50 off 25b in his innovative style. With 23 required off the last over, Darren Sammy brought in Marlon Samuels to bowl the last over and Samuels responded by having Hales stumped for 68 (51b, 4x5, 6x2). Morgan finished on an amazing 71* (36b 4x4 6x5) as West Indies sealed a 15 run win.
