Winning CLT20 will be icing on the cake: Kumble

“We made a commitment to qualify for the semi-finals before we set out from India, and I am happy that we could fulfil that commitment,” the grit the determination was there for everybody to see on skipper Anil Kumble’s face when he said that. A victory only mattered against the Highveld Lions to qualify for the semis, but Kumble’s mind is not limited to the commitment made back in India. He wants to go a step farther. “We just got to win the semi-finals,” was the astonishingly cool reply. Read between the words, and it says, being CLT20 Champion would be the target.

Obviously ecstatic at the way Teach Royal Challengers played, but Captain Cool is not willing to be complacent. There is a reason behind it. Kumble reasons out, “After the first year, we had been written off and called by all sorts of names. But we bounced back in the last two years and really played as a team and proved our quality. It would be a fitting reply to end this CLT20 on a high and winning it would be really icing on the cake.”

Nearing 40, Jumbo is still hungry for more. He was livid at his own bowling performance against Mumbai Indians and for missing the catch off Dwayne Bravo. “But I am personally pleased tonight to have raised my own performance,” it shows how the skipper values the performances of each and every member of the team.

Was it a relaxed match tonight? “Not really, especially after the first 10 overs when the Lions were cruising along. But we bowled really well and after restricting them within 160 and when our openers laid the foundation, I knew we would win as long as Virat was there.”
