World T20 warm-up, Ind vs SL: Sri Lanka clinch narrow win
Sri Lanka kick started their World Twenty20 campaign in Bangladesh, beating familiar rivals India by 5 runs in the warm-up game on Monday at Mirpur.
MS Dhoni returned, winning the toss and putting Sri Lanka into bat first. Varun Aaron (1/18) picked up opener Kusal Perera (21) early, but Mahela Jayawardena (30) provided some momentum before Amit Mishra held on to a return catch to get rid of him. TM Dilshan (9) followed, along with Kumar Sangakkara (4) and Sri Lanka were 77/4 in the 12th over. However, captain Dinesh Chandimal's 25-ball 29 gave the Islanders a boost, which was then carried by the tail-enders. Sri Lanka put up a total of 153/6 in 20 overs. R Ashwin finished with impressive figures of 3/22.
It wasn't the best of starts for India as their openers once again failed to hang on. Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma fell cheaply, giving Sri Lanka an early breakthrough. Suresh Raina, who was promoted to No.3 made the most of his opportunity, scoring 41 off just 31 balls (5 fours, 1 six). Accompanying the southpaw at the other end was comeback kid Yuvraj Singh, who came out all guns blazing with a 28-ball 33.
Raina fell to Mendis, followed by Ajinkya Rahane (0) who was dismissed by Senanayake. However, the biggest upset came in the form of Virat Kohli's dismissal as Malinga cleaned him up. India were 88/5 in the 13th over. Yuvraj continued to attack but nicked one behind to give the Lankans an opening. The lower order then crumbled, with Malinga wreaking havoc to wrap up India's innings for 148.
