Zaheer leads Mumbai to outright win in Ranji opener
Stand-in captain Zaheer Khan picked 5 wickets as Mumbai sealed their first outright victory of the season by 4 wickets against Haryana at Lahli on Wednesday.
On Day 1, Haryana were dismissed for a measly score of 134 after being put in to bat first. Zaheer (1/38) bowled consistently and bagged his only wicket in the innings as he castled Sunny Singh (3). Abhishek Nayar (4/38) ran through Haryana's middle order and was brilliantly supported by Javed Khan (2/12).
For a batting line-up that featured Sachin Tendulkar, a score of 136 wasn't praiseworthy. The Haryana bowlers bowled exceedingly well in bundling out Mumbai for a paltry score the following day. Mumbai's lead of 2 runs was quickly overtaken by Haryana in their 2nd innings and they went on to post 241 on the board. Zaheer finished with impressive figures of 4/62.
Chasing a stiff target, Mumbai lost veteran Wasim Jaffer (1) in the blink of an eye on Day 3. Ajinkya Rahane (40) was bowled, followed by the settled Kaustubh Pawar (47) who departed in succession. Nayar hung on, playing second fiddle to Tendulkar. On Day 4, it was Dhawal Kulkarni (16) who played an important role as Tendulkar guided Mumbai to it's first win with an unbeaten 79.
Brief Scores: Mumbai 136 & 240 (Tendulkar 79*, Zaheer 4/62) beat Haryana (Joginder 5/16, S Singh 63) 134 & 241 by 4 wickets.
