He is a brilliant prodigy – Shreyas Iyer opens up on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

There has been a major furor over the inclusion of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in India’s playing XI, with the young southpaw named in the squad for the T20I series against England.

Talking at the pre-match presser ahead of India’s opening clash against England in the series in Chester-le-Street, Iyer clarified that it is not about just adding one name to the side but a lot of decisions revolve around the same. He also underlined that it is also about developing someone with enough security about their future.

Shedding light on the discussions around Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Shreyas Iyer said, “See, you never know, what is going to happen at the moment. Our hands are also tied at the moment in terms of what we are going to do because this is very private and this is something that we discuss in the team. We can’t let everyone know about what combinations we are going to play. Obviously, the opponents cannot know that this is going to happen. He is a brilliant prodigy. And whenever he gets an opportunity to play, definitely, he will do brilliantly.”

He further added how the process has to be gradual, Iyer included, “Every individual who is playing in the team has performed. It’s not that just one individual has fared well. We have to build an opportunity and a security for everyone so that every individual has confidence looking forward to the tournament. The ones who helped us win the last T20 World Cup, definitely has an idea about how to play T20 and they have also been the major pillars for the side in the format. It is important that we back them as well.”
