India finally wrested control of the ongoing Test in New Delhi despite a spirited show from West Indies in the second innings at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. What started as a repair job yesterday did find its light at the end of the tunnel but the lead secured by Shubman Gill and company was way too overwhelming to be plugged emphatically.

With West Indies starting the day at 173/2, India finally managed to end a massive stack with the wicket of the in-form John Campbell, who completed his maiden Test century but was trapped LBW in front of the stumps a while later, allowing India to have a sneak peek into what could be a match-winning spell. However, Shai Hope continued to battle it with all his heart and soul, registering the second ton for West Indies in the ongoing series.

Soon, Mohammed Siraj sent his stumps flying with an absolute screamer as he fell for 103, reducing the visitors to 271/4. Kuldeep Yadav added another one to his overall tally as he claimed the crucial scalp of Tevin Imlach (12) before West Indies found the pressure intensifying as they lost Roston Chase too for a well-orchestrated 40.

Things started looking even bleaker as Jomel Warrican (3) and Anderson Phillip (2) were back to the pavilion in no time at all. Wobbling at 311/9 from 293/4, West Indies witnessed another remarkable slide. Much to India’s surprise though, Jayden Seales (32) came up with a strong show of defiance while Justin Greaves registered another sensational half-century before India could roll West Indies over for 390.

Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah shared six wickets between them as West Indies set India a target of 121 runs in the second innings. Despite India losing out on Yashasvi Jaiswal (8) early, the duo of KL Rahul (25*) and Sai Sudharsan (30*) ensured that there were no further hiccups until the end of the day as they added 54 runs for the second wicket. When play resumes tomorrow, India will need 58 runs to win.

Brief scores:

India – 518/5d (Yashasvi Jaiswal – 175, Shubman Gill – 129*, Jomel Warrican – 3/98)

West Indies – 248 (Alick Athanaze – 41, Shai Hope – 36, Kuldeep Yadav – 5/82)

West Indies (FO) – 390 (John Campbell – 115, Shai Hope – 103, Jasprit Bumrah 3/44)

India – 63/1 (Sai Sudharsan – 30*, Jomel Warrican – 1/15)

Final update: India need 58 runs to win
