Tim David headlines surreal batting charge as RCB blow away CSK in Southern Derby

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru secured their fourth consecutive win against their southern arch-rivals, the Chennai Super Kings as a power-hitting showdown sealed the fate of IPL 2026's El Clasico. Batting first, RCB hammered the highest total of IPL 2026 so far, as all their batters contributed handsomely.

Winning the toss, CSK opted to bowl first. RCB went in with an unchanged XI from their win against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Phil Salt and Virat Kohli gave RCB a solid start. Kohli (28) and Salt (46) added 37 runs for the opening stand before Anshul Kamboj struck to remove Kohli. However, Kohli's fall did very little to dissuade RCB from attacking the bowlers. An incoming Devdutt Padikkal took his time to settle down but Salt carried forth the assault.

Another quickfire 56-run stand between Salt and Devdutt had RCB cruising at jet speed before Shivam Dube eventually removed the English hard-hitter. Padikkal was joined by an incoming RCB captain, Rajat Patidar and the train of thoughts for RCB saw no divergence from the initial plan whatsoever.

They went hard after the bowlers and it soon turned into double trouble for the Yellow Army as Rajat Patidar and DDP attacked from both ends. The two added 58 runs for the third wicket from just 21 balls with the latter spearheading the charge. Padikkal registered his second consecutive half-century in IPL 2026, smashing 50 off just 29 balls.

With less than six overs to go, RCB unleashed a reckoning force called Tim David in the center. After a wary brokering of the first six balls, David switched gears. It was a surreal acceleration as David and Patidar dominated the bowlers and toyed with them at will. The duo added 99 runs off the last 35 balls, out of which 97 were scored in the final five.

Tim David was unbeaten with 70 off just 25 balls, bludgeoning three fours and eight sixes. Patidar stayed not out for 48 off just 19 balls as RCB posted 250/3 from their allotment of 20 overs. Just to underline the sheer dominance carved by David, he smashed Jamie Overton for 30 runs in the 19th over, whacking four sixes and a four.

It went without saying that if CSK had to chase it down, they would have to beat history. Much to CSK’s woe, they received a rude awakening. Jacob Duffy struck in the very first over, getting the better of the CSK captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad (7) as the latter holed out to Devdutt Padikkal at slip. Even before CSK could gather their senses from the fall of the first wicket, Bhuvneshwar Kumar added to their tribulations, claiming Ayush Mhatre (1) in the very next over. Complicating matters further for the Yellow Army, Duffy added another wicket to his tally, removing Sanju Samson (9) as he was caught by DDP at slip.

Wobbling at 30/3, CSK needed something solid to stave off the early invasion from RCB. Sarfaraz Khan (50) came up with the much-needed lifeline. Batting alongside Kartik Sharma, who didn’t really get much of the strikes, Khan came out lashing at almost everything that he faced. However, in a sudden twist of affairs, Krunal Pandya very ruthlessly crushed CSK’s resurgence claiming Sarfaraz and Kartik Sharma (6) in the same over.

With the required rate leaping high enough, Shivam Dube (18) tried his best to keep the Men in Yellow alive in the game alongside Prashant Veer (43). However, all that solidity evaporated in a jiffy when Jitesh Sharma grabbed an absolute blinder behind the stumps, removing the former. The visitors still managed to fight back through an incoming Jamie Overton who combined well with Veer to steady the ship.

But with time ticking away, CSK had to get in another gear shift and that was RCB’s window of opportunity. Veer’s attempt to drive Bhuvneshwar Kumar saw him plonk the shot in a very untoward manner while Rajat Patidar claimed a sensational forward-diving catch.

Suyash Sharma joined the party too by snuffing out the last shard of CSK resistance in the form of Jamie Overton (37) whose skier was comfortably taken by substitute fielder, Jacob Bethell. The remainder of the task was more of an obligation for the Royal Challengers as they sealed the game with two balls to spare. RCB registered a staggering 43-run win, propelling themselves to the top of the points table with four points and a superlative NRR of +2.501 over their closest pursuers namely Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings.

On a day where 457 runs were scored in 40 overs, Suyash Sharma was the pick of the lot with figures of 1/21 from four overs, Bhuvneshwar Kumar claimed three wickets which also made him the first fast bowler in the antiquity of the IPL to register 200 wickets. Tim David won the Player of the Match award for his sensational performance with the bat.
