The Indian bowlers did a decent job of restricting Afghanistan under 200 after Virat Kohli opted to field first. Spinners operated in tandem as Ravindra Jadeja (4/30) and R Ashwin (3/31) ripped through the batting order. Opener Noor Ali Zadran (31) got a start but it wasn't enough to evoke an inspired batting performance from the rest. Mohammad Shami (2/50) struck first up, dismissing opener Nawroz Mangal in the 6th over. A typical collapsed ensued, until tail-ender Samiullah Shenwari's fighting knock of 50 gave his team some hope.

Things went Pakistan's way right from the toss. They elected to bowl first, putting pressure on an Indian batting line-up sans MS Dhoni. Dhawan and Kohli fell early, but Rohit Sharma looked like a man on mission, smashing his 22nd ODI fifty in quick time. However, Saeed Ajmal and Mohammad Talha bowled tight spells and provoked Sharma to make a mistake, who gave debutant Talha his maiden wicket. His departure made way for Ambati Rayudu, who grabbed the opportunity and scored only his 2nd ODI fifty alongside Rahane. The latter though, succumbed soon after and India were tottering at 103/4.
