Having been put in to bat first, West Indies struggled to put bat on ball on a slow pitch. However, their innings was bolstered by Dwayne Smith who came out all guns blazing with his 43-ball 72. Chris Gayle looked scratchy at the other end, playing his slowest T20I innings, but he hung on long enough till the two accounted for a 97-run 1st wicket stand. Smith was the first one to depart, as he top-edge the ball straight into the fielder's hands.
