ICC T20 Rankings: Virat Kohli becomes highest ranked Indian batsman

Kohli was ranked fourth before the ongoing World T20 in Bangladesh, but his consistent performances in the tournament has helped him jump a place in the rankings with 821 rating points. RCB teammate Yuvraj Singh is next on the list, placed in sixth position with 695 rating points. The southpaw is also the fourth best all-rounder in the world.

Left-handed batsman Suresh Raina also features in the Top 10, with 689 rating points at No. 7, while off spinner R Ashwin is the only Indian in the bowler rankings, placed in sixth place with 686 rating points.

ICC T20 Rankings: India jump to No.1 spot

India cruised to the semi-finals of the ICC tournament after they comprehensively defeated hosts Bangladesh at the Sher-e-Bangla stadium on Friday. They are now placed at the top of the table with 129 rating points, followed by Sri Lanka (128 points) in second place.

On Sunday, India outclassed a hapless Australian side and maintained their unbeaten streak, winning all four games played so far.

After his stellar century against Bangladesh, Kohli achieved career-best rating points of 886. However, low-key performances in the following matches resulted in the loss of five points. Though, Kohli is still ahead of the South African batsman by nine rating points.

Previously placed at No.9, Kohli jumped a place after finishing with 214 runs in Two Tests in New Zealand, collecting 784 ranking points. Cheteshwar Pujara at No.7 remains the top-ranked Indian batsman in the list, while South Africa batsman AB de Villiers continues to rule the No.1 spot.

Kohli has been one of the few shining batsmen in an otherwise disastrous tour for India, scoring 291 runs in the 5-match ODI series against New Zealand. India lost the series 0-4, but Kohli managed to collect 11 rating points in the list, taking his tally to 870.

De Villiers is the current No.1 batsman with 872 rating points to his name.

Kohli, who is currently ranked No.2 in the ICC ODI Rankings for batsmen with 859 points, is only 13 behind World No.1 AB de Villiers. Overall, India have three batsmen in the Top 10, namely skipper MS Dhoni at No.6 and southpaw Shikhar Dhawan in 10th place. The Top 20 consists of New Zealand batsman Ross Taylor and India's new-found opener Rohit Sharma in 18th position.

If Kohli performs well, he stands a chance to regain the No.1 spot that he last held in November 2013.

India start their campaign in the 1st ODI against New Zealand at Napier on January 19.

Pujara achieves career best ranking

A career best ranking is what Cheteshwar achieved as a result of this marvellous show of grit, maturity and patience. In the recent ICC Test rankings, Pujara moved up 2 places with 851 points to the fifth place.

The recently concluded India’s tour of South Africa saw Cheteshwar as a rather matured entity of the Indian Test team. His stance was of that of a reliable batsmen and everytime he walked on to the crease, he oozed the confidence of a well-grounded anchor.
