Asia Cup: India seal comfortable win against Afghanistan
The Indian bowlers did a decent job of restricting Afghanistan under 200 after Virat Kohli opted to field first. Spinners operated in tandem as Ravindra Jadeja (4/30) and R Ashwin (3/31) ripped through the batting order. Opener Noor Ali Zadran (31) got a start but it wasn't enough to evoke an inspired batting performance from the rest. Mohammad Shami (2/50) struck first up, dismissing opener Nawroz Mangal in the 6th over. A typical collapsed ensued, until tail-ender Samiullah Shenwari's fighting knock of 50 gave his team some hope. However, he soon ran out of partners and Afghanistan were bundled out for 159 in 45.2 overs.
India sent in Ajinkya Rahane to open alongside Shikhar Dhawan, and it worked very well as Rahane struck a patient fifty to set up the chase. Dhawan scored freely at the other end, racking up his half-century as well. Rahane (56) departed after adding 121 runs for the 1st wicket, but India were already halfway through. Dhawan (60) followed in the next over, as he was clean bowled by Nabi. Rohit Sharma and Dinesh Karthik then took India home, completing the target in the 33rd over.
