Cheteshwar Pujara suggests a key change in India’s batting order for Adelaide Test
A little over a week after India secured a thumping victory over Australia in the opening Test at Perth, they will be up against a bigger challenge as a day-night affair awaits them at Adelaide.
The Last time the two teams faced off in a day-night Test, it was an utter disaster for Team India, although they staged a strong turnaround of affairs and eventually clinched the series with a historic win at Gabba.
After a phenomenal batting display from the Indian top-order at Optus, there have been questions about the potential shuffling in the batting order with Rohit Sharma back, and the possible return of Shubman Gill as well.
Shedding light on how India’s batting unit could look like for the Adelaide Test, Cheteshwar Pujara suggested a couple of his opinions.
Talking to ESPNCricinfo, Pujara said, “I think, for some reason if we can carry on with the same batting order, like KL and Yashasvi to open, Rohit could come in at three, and Shubman could come in at five.”
He further added, “If Rohit wants to open, KL should bat at No. 3. Nothing later than that. I think he has to bat top of the order, because it suits his game really well. I hope we don't tinker around with that."
Pujara also talked about Shubman Gill’s position in the batting unit, adding, “Ideally No. 5. Because it allows him to come in at a time, even if we lose two wickets early, he is someone who can negotiate the new ball. But if he walks in after, say, 25 or 30 overs, he can play his shots. He can play his natural game. And in case we lose the first three wickets early, Gill walks in and saves Rishabh Pant for the old ball. [Pant] doesn't have to face the new ball. I wouldn't want him to walk in to bat when the ball is hard and new."
