From a shaky opening act to a dominant curtain-call: Flashback to India’s triumph in Zimbabwe last time
As India return to action in the shortest format of the game, this time against Zimbabwe in the latter’s backyard, memories are still fresh from the last time these two sides met.
India had arrived on that tour fresh off their 2024 T20 World Cup triumph, with a reset well and truly in motion.
Much to India’s shock, they lost the series opener against Zimbabwe in a low-scoring encounter. The defeat sparked plenty of unwanted reactions, forcing the Indian side to sit up and take note.
They hit back in style in the very next game, as Abhishek Sharma came out dashing, compelling the world to sit up and take note.
Sharma’s 46-ball hundred, combined with Ruturaj Gaikwad’s 47-ball 77 and Rinku Singh’s 22-ball 48, propelled India to a staggering 234 on the board. The Indian bowlers were at their sensational best as a clinical performance bundled out Zimbabwe for 134, handing India a 100-run win.
India maintained their grip on the series, turning the 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead as they beat Zimbabwe by 23 runs in the third clash of the series. A combined batting effort from the Indian batters was backed up well by the bowlers, sealing a comfortable win against the hosts.
India’s dominance only grew shinier as they registered a 10-wicket win in the fourth T20I to pocket the series with a game to spare. Yashasvi Jaiswal clobbered an unbeaten 53-ball 93, while Shubman Gill played a slightly more controlled knock that still yielded 39-ball 58, leading India to a phenomenal win.
India made it 4-1 by hammering Zimbabwe in the series finale as well. Another compact batting performance, rife with cameos, was spearheaded by Sanju Samson’s half-century. Mukesh Kumar clinched four wickets to leave Zimbabwe in utter disarray as India snatched a 42-run win.
The fightback from Team India was thoroughly noteworthy, signalling a spirit that refused to go down without a battle.
With another chapter set to unfold in less than 24 hours, one can only hope the Men in Blue recreate that same dominance over their counterparts in the series ahead.
