Gavaskar thinks Rohit Sharma can replicate his World Cup performance in England

India’s World Cup campaign in 2019 may have ended in the semifinal against New Zealand but there were some historic individual performances along the way. Opener Rohit Sharma cracked a record five hundreds in the tournament.

Since then Sharma has assumed the role of an opener in the longest format as well. In fact, Sharma opened in a Test match in England for the first time when he took the field against New Zealand last month. The outing may have yielded an average result but the former India skipper turned commentator Sunil Gavaskar has high hopes from the fellow Mumbaikar.

"We saw Rohit Sharma score five incredible hundreds in the World Cup in England two years back,” Gavaskar had told PTI.

"The century he got against South Africa was on a tough pitch and cold conditions and he made the adjustments beautifully. Now two years later he is even more experienced so don't be surprised if he repeats that performance in this series too,” he added.

India are scheduled to meet England in a five-match Test series. There is no doubt that the challenges of facing the red ball in England are way tougher than turning up for a white-ball game.

And with the kind of quality England have in their line-up, India will not have it easy against the hosts. However, Sharma will take confidence from his World Cup outing to prove Gavaskar’s faith right.
