India meet West Indies in virtual T20 World Cup quarter-final in Kolkata

After all the drama and tension, India and West Indies meet for a virtual quarter-final clash at the Eden Gardens, in a bid to seize a berth in the semis. Both the teams had different equations before the beginning of their last game but it all flipped emphatically at the end of the day with the Islanders being humbled by South Africa and India dominating Zimbabwe.

India will be boiling with confidence after their batters put up a collective show to command Zimbabwe in a lopsided encounter. One of the major reliefs for the Men in Blue will be Abhishek Sharma’s return to form, as he scored a fine half-century to put away all fears of him falling deeper into a spiral of despair. However, against a powerhouse like West Indies, India will like to close things and not leave them dangling.

The Islanders showed it in the last game that they bat extremely deep. Being reduced to 83/7, they somehow managed to steer the wheel around and courtesy of a 89-run stand for the eighth wicket between Jason Holder and Romario Shepherd, they managed to put up a competitive total on the board. The Indian bowling unit led by Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh will have to come together if they are to restrict the batting unit of the Caribbean team which is one of their key strengths in the tournament.

Another crucial talking point in the game will be how both the teams use their spinners. Kolkata has always been a spin-friendly surface which will bring in a very important question if India will throw in an additional turner in the form of Kuldeep Yadav. Varun Chakravarthy has been off his element in the Super Eights with figures of 1/47 against South Africa and 1/35 against Zimbabwe and he’ll have a key role to play.

Venue watch:

The surface in Kolkata has always been a spin-friendly one. In the first half of the game, spinners will come in handy. Despite the bounce being fairly true, the batters might have to practice caution early on in the innings. However, in the second half, once dew sets in, batting should be a lot easier and spinners might not exactly prove to be as effective as in the first innings with the grip of the ball becoming a decisive factor for the turners.
