Indian bowlers endure scruffy day at the office as South Africa post mammoth first-innings total

India endured a tough day in Guwahati as the bowlers were given a run for their money, courtesy of a solid show from Senuran Muthusamy and Marco Jansen, both of who kept the scoreboarding ticking and put on massive scores. Starting the day at 247/6, it was expected that India will be able to consolidate their hold over the game to a large extent.

Much to their woes, Muthusamy and Jansen knitted together the highest partnership of the series until now as they added 97 runs for the eight wicket, a stand that knocked the winds out of India’s sails. Kyle Vereynne (45) looked in total control alongside Muthusamy, which helped South Africa dictate the morning session.

It was Ravindra Jadeja who finally broke the partnership, removing Verreynne. However, that didn’t solve India’s problems, and on the contrary, it multiplied them. Then started the marathon stand between Jansen (93) and Muthusamy (109) as the Indian bowlers continued their frustrated attempts at dislodging the pair.

It was finally Mohammed Siraj who removed Muthusamy to break the partnership and that allowed India a sneak peek into clean up. However, it took them some time to claim the remainder of the two wickets as South Africa were finally bundled out for 489. At the end of day's play, India's openers remained unscathed as they racked up nine runs for no loss of wickets.

Brief scores:

South Africa – 489 (Senuran Muthusamy – 109, Marco Jansen – 93, Kuldeep Yadav – 4/115)

India – 9/0 (Yashasvi Jaiswal – 7*)

Final update: India trail by 480 runs
