After a major win to kickstart the T20I series against New Zealand in Christchurch, India have been dealt a major blow ahead of their second clash at the same venue. Ishan Kishan has been ruled out of the second T20I after sustaining a right adductor strain on Thursday.

Kishan’s injury in the first game compelled India to promote Tilak Varma to No. 3 which is usually occupied by the former. Talking at the post-match presser, India’s batting coach, Sitanshu Kotak opened up on Ishan Kishan’s injury and what that means for the Men in Blue in the upcoming game.

Kotak said, “Ishan Kishan has a niggle in his groin. I know there was speculation [about the change in the batting order] but it wasn't a change as such. It was because of the groin strain [to Kishan]. I think he is unlikely for one game."

Quickly opening up on the potential alternative, Kotak added, “If Ishan can't play - unless he recovers completely, the medical team will tell [us] - then obviously Vaibhav comes into the calculations as a batter. [He is] definitely one of the strongest persons who can play."
