Kuldeep's five-wicket haul puts India on top before West Indies duo's late resistance on Day 3

The third day of the second Test was a tale of two halves as India dominated the first half of the day but lost control in the second. After what felt like a good enough display from the Indian bowlers in the first innings that cleaned up the remainder of the Caribbean batting unit in quick succession, the same bowling unit met a stern challenge from the visitors' batting in their second innings.

Starting the day at 140/4, West Indies lost the remaining six wickets in a span of just 108 runs. Shai Hope (36) who delivered promise yesterday was sent back to the pavilion in no time as Kuldeep Yadav doubled his tally. Tevin Imlach (21), the other unbeaten batter from overnight, couldn't get any further either as Kuldeep removed him.

To make matters worse for the Islanders, Yadav dealt another clout, claiming Justin Greaves (17) in short succession, reducing West Indies to 174/7. Things started to look a lot more complicated for the visitors but somehow they held on with persistent stands towards the latter half of the innings. Handy knocks from Khary Pierre (23), Anderson Phillip (24) and Jayden Seales (13) took them to 248. Kuldeep spearheaded the Indian charge with a five-wicket haul.

With West Indies trailing by 270 runs, Shubman Gill decided to enforce a follow-on. Despite India dealing a double whammy earlier in the innings that saw the departure of Tagenarine Chanderpaul (10) and Alick Athanaze (7), a strong stand between Shai Hope (66*) and John Campbell (87*) rescinded India’s sting any further. The duo added 138 runs for the third wicket to close the day as West Indies knitted together a strong stand of defiance that India will hope to dent early on in their chase of a series sweep.

Brief scores:

India – 518/5d (Yashasvi Jaiswal – 175, Shubman Gill – 129*, Jomel Warrican – 3/98)

West Indies – 248 (Alick Athanaze – 41, Shai Hope – 36, Kuldeep Yadav – 5/82)

West Indies (FO) – 173/2 (John Campbell – 87*, Shai Hope – 66*, Mohammed Siraj – 1/10)

Final update: West Indies trail by 97 runs
