Seniors scolded me a lot: Yuvraj Singh

Yuvraj Singh is one of the most flamboyant left-handers that the Indian cricket has seen. The sixer king won India matches single-handedly and was instrumental in India winning two world cups – T20 World Cup in 2007 and 50-over WC in 2011.

But the fighter, who defeated a deadly disease off the field had often been also considered a mischievous name in the dressing room who loved pulling off pranks on his teammates.

But Yuvraj did not always get away cheaply, especially in front of seniors who scolded him on the field on numerous occasions.

In an interview to sports magazine, Sportstar, Yuvraj said, “I was scolded a lot. From Rahul (Dravid). From Venky (Prasad). Kaif and I were scolded so much on the field by Kumble but we accepted it, learnt and improved.”

Yuvraj, who retired last year after a prolific career that spanned close to two decades, also said that he got tremendous support from former captain Sourav Ganguly. “I have played under Sourav (Ganguly) and had a lot of support from him. Then Mahi (MS Dhoni) took over. It’s a difficult choice to make between Sourav and Mahi. I have more memories of time under Sourav because of the support he gave me.”

The left-hander, who holds a prestigious record of hitting 6 sixes in an over, feels that the Indian team needs a “good guy” who can talk to the players on matters off the field.

“What they need is a psychologist of authority who can guide them in personal issues. Make them better persons. We had Paddy Upton who would discuss other issues of life, like fear of failure, and it helped us so much. The team probably needs someone like him.”
