Sir Garfield Sobers passes away at the age of 89
Cricket has lost one of its most towering icons, Sir Garfield Sobers. One of the finest to have ever walked out onto the 22 yards passed away at his home in Barbados at the age of 89.
Sobers was hailed as the greatest all-rounder the game has ever produced. His reputation as one of the finest Test batters was equally unparalleled. Playing 93 Tests between 1954 and 1974, Sobers amassed 8,032 runs at a superb average of 57.78, and also picked up 235 wickets with the ball.
His unbeaten 365 against Pakistan in 1958, scored at just 21 years old, stood as the highest individual score in Test cricket for 36 years before Brian Lara surpassed it.
The ICC’s premier annual award in men’s cricket - the Sir Garfield Sobers Award - has been named in his honour, recognising the best overall performer in men’s international cricket across all formats.
Cricket West Indies posted on X, “A great innings has come to an end. In our hearts, now and forever, Sir Garfield Sobers.”
Sobers made his first-class debut at the tender age of 16, with his Test debut following a year later against England in Jamaica. He first made his mark as a bowler, but as time went on, his batting flair began garnering significant attention from across the world.
In the wake of Sobers’ passing, Dr. The Hon. Kishore Shallow, the board president of Cricket West Indies, released a statement which read, “There are moments in the story of a people when the life of one individual becomes woven into the hopes, dreams, and identity of generations. Today, the Caribbean mourns the passing of such an individual … His mastery of batting, bowling and fielding was unparalleled, but his true significance reached far beyond the boundary ropes.”
It further stated, “He emerged from the Caribbean at a time when our region was finding its voice and asserting its place on the world stage. Through his excellence, he gave millions across our islands and in the diaspora, a renewed belief in what was possible. He showed that greatness was not confined by the size of our nations, the geography of our islands or the circumstances of our beginnings.”
It concluded by adding, “Sir Garfield Sobers became more than a sporting icon. He became a symbol of Caribbean excellence, resilience, and possibility. His achievements brought pride to Barbados, inspiration to the West Indies and admiration from every corner of the cricketing world.”
