What's Irfan Pathan's idea of a farewell game for retired cricketers?

After the recent announcement of MS Dhoni’s retirement, the talk about farewell matches have once again gained heat. Former India all-rounder, Irfan Pathan too have joined the debate and floated an interesting idea.

Pathan has suggested a charity-cum-farewell game between a team of all those players who did not get a farewell match and the current Indian team captained by Virat Kohli. Pathan retired from all forms of cricket earlier this year.

Pathan’s list comprises former India opener Gautam Gambhir who retired in 2018, Virender Sehwag (retired in 2014), Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman (retired in 2012), Yuvraj Singh (retired in 2019), Suresh Raina, Dhoni, Pathan (2020), and Agarkar (retired in 2007).

“Many people are talking about a farewell game for retired players who didn’t get a proper send-off from the game. How about a charity cum farewell game from a team consisting of retired players vs the current Indian team?” Pathan tweeted.

One of the names featuring in the list is of Yuvraj Singh, who according to a few reports, have been asked to make a return to Punjab’s domestic team. However, Yuvraj’s decision is not yet known.

Pathan’s idea might sound interesting but it remains to be seen if the players agree to it. Some of these players are retired for close to a decade now, and seemed to have moved on with their professional commitments.

And on top of all, the idea of a charity match during COVID-19 times might be a little difficult to pull off.
