Wouldn’t call India chokers: Deep Dasgupta on Team India's performance at ICC events

India’s 2019 World Cup campaign did not have a pleasing end. Although India made it to the semifinal of the event, they were expected to go the distance with the kind of team they had going into the tournament. But a couple of injuries dented their campaign a bit before New Zealand spoiled their plans.

In fact, it’s been more than seven years since India won an ICC trophy. It was in 2013 when India won the ICC Champions Trophy. The dry run has often armed the detractors, who question the current Indian team’s ability to excel at multi-nation ICC tournaments.

In a recent interaction on Sports Today, former India wicket-keeper Deep Dasgupta was asked to share his views on India’s predicament.

"Think about the choker remark the fact is that India has not won a knockout game in the ICC events since 2013. Again, there is no particular reason for that apart from the fact that maybe taking too much pressure and overthinking just because it's a big game in an ICC tournament," Dasgupta said.

Dasgupta said that India have been denied their chances due to a variety of factors. But none of that should mean that India are a choker at the ICC events.

"Also, think of the New Zealand game, I think India should have won that. 2017, the Champions Trophy game (final) against Pakistan, that no-ball, let's not get into that. We have spoken a lot about that no-ball. Then, in the West Indies Wankhede game (2016 T20 World Cup), the toss played a crucial role. 180 (192) was not a bad score, but the dew factor and all that played a role," he added.

"There is a reason behind every game, we need to look into them individually. I wouldn't call India chokers," signed off the cricketer turned commentator.
