BCCI considering September window to resume IPL 2021

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Indian Premier League Governing Council (IPL GC) on Monday decided to postpone IPL 2021 with immediate effect. With several cricketers infected with the virus, the board had no choice but to reschedule the competition.

It all began when two members of the Kolkata Knight Riders - Varun Chakravarthy and Sandeep Warrier - tested positive for the virus. It prompted the organisers to postpone the clash between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore. Soon after, it was revealed that a handful of Chennai Super Kings players had tested positive for the virus.

The issue escalated when Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Wriddhiman Saha and Delhi Capitals’ leg-spinner Amit Mishra also tested positive. There was no option left. The board had to postpone the competition.

With Team India set to embark on a four-month tour to England for the ICC World Test Championship and five-match Test series, the BCCI is exploring the September window to hold the remainder of the tournament. Speaking to Cricbuzz, IPL chairman Brijesh Patel confirmed that they are looking at possible windows to organise IPL 2021.

"Now we have to look for a window. If we get one, we will explore holding it. We'll have to see if it is possible in September. We need to examine the plans of the ICC and other boards, ” Patel said.

Presently, the board is focussing on sending the players back home safely.
