After calling the shots emphatically on Day 1, Team India bossed Day 2 with similar pomp and vigour as West Indies failed to put up a show.

Despite West Indies getting rid of Yashasvi Jaiswal early in the day, Shubman Gill played the perfect axis around which India’s hopes orbited perfectly and by the time the declaration came, the hosts were comfortably in the driver’s seat.

Jaiswal (175) was unfortunate as he lost his wicket after a massive mix-up, adding just two runs to his overnight tally. However, Shubman Gill stood tall, harbouring all the pressure while an incoming Nitish Kumar Reddy (43) bolstered India’s solidity.

The Gill-Reddy duo added 91 runs for the fifth wicket before Jomel Warrican could get rid of the latter. Dhruv Jurel continued to bat with the same intent as India started switching gears. Jurel (44) delivered a fine show with the bat while Shubman Gill registered his tenth ton in Test cricket.

Gill stayed unbeaten for 129 as India declared at 518/5. Jomel Warrican was the pick of the lot for the Islanders with figures of 3/98. After the batting disaster that West Indies had in the first game, they were expected to play more patiently in order to cut down the deficit.

Ravindra Jadeja tasted early success as he sent John Campbell (10) packing in no time. However, a fine partnership from Tagenarine Chanderpaul (34) and Alick Athanaze (41) did allow West Indies to breathe better. The duo added 66 runs for the second wicket before Jadeja struck again and Chanderpaul was on his way back.

Kuldeep Yadav saw the back of Athanaze, as India started bolstering their grip on the game. Shai Hope’s unbeaten 31 did offer some hope to the Islanders but Jadeja added another crucial scalp as he sent the West Indies skipper, Roston Chase (0) packing. At the end of day’s play, West Indies were 140/4 with Jadeja leading the Indian battery.

Brief scores:

India – 518/5 (Yashasvi Jaiswal – 175, Shubman Gill – 129*, Jomel Warrican – 3/98)

West Indies – 140/4 (Alick Athanaze – 41, Shai Hope – 31*, Ravindra Jadeja – 3/37)

Final update: West Indies trail by 378 runs
