Washington Sundar – Current Form

02 Apr, 2020 By Editor

Born in Chennai, Washington Sundar's tryst with the game started when he used to accompany his father for the first division matches. He soon developed a fondness towards the game and began to train at his home-run academy. Washington provided a glimpse of his credentials in the high-profile BCCI junior white-ball tournament, Vinoo Mankad Trophy. The youngster amassed 409 runs and fetched 10 wickets in 9 matches.

With Venkatesh Prasad at the helm, the BCCI junior selection committee took note of the all-rounder's performance. At the age of 16, Washington was drafted into the India U-19 squad for the all-important U-19 World Cup.

In the 10th edition of IPL, Washington was called upon to replace fellow statemate R Ashwin. The youngster showed early signs of his white-ball prowess. He played a central role in the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant's successful campaign.

A year on after his breakthrough performance, Washington Sundar became the youngest player to debut for India in the T20I format.

With the absence of a majority of stars in the Indian line-up, Washington shouldered the bowling attack remarkably as he played an instrumental role in India's triumph in the Nidahas trophy. After picking up 8 wickets from 5 matches and operating at an economy rate of 5.7, the all-rounder was adjudged the Man of the Series.

In the 2018 IPL auction, Royal Challengers Bangalore acquired the services of the all-rounder for a sum of 3.2 crores.

The Meteoric rise of Washington Sundar

Washington Sundar has fared well in the recently concluded domestic season. The all-rounder played a pivotal role in Tamil Nadu's qualification to the final of Syed Mushtaq Ali. He scored a total of 271 runs in 9 matches with a staggering average of 54.20.

Coming off from a decent domestic season, Washington's ability to contain runs in the T20 format is a promising factor. With an overall economy rate of just 6.93, the offspinner has proven to be the most economical bowler in the recent past.

Having acquired a wealth of experience playing at the highest level, Washington Sundar would look to cement his place in the Indian team, in which the IPL would be of vital importance.
