Things didn’t go as planned for India against Bangladesh as they conceded a six-run loss in the final Super Fours clash of Asia Cup 2023, despite a solid effort from Shubman Gill, who smashed a blistering ton and kept the hopes alive until the end. Gill’s effort was accompanied by a rock-solid display from Axar Patel as well who blasted 42 from 34 balls to bring the tie closer only to fall in the dying embers of the game.

India made as many as five changes to their side from the one that played against Sri Lanka which saw Virat Kohli, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah rested for the game.

Rohit led the side against Bangladesh in what was more of a preparatory chapter in a bid to test their bench strength. Tilak Varma made his debut, while Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Shami, Prasidh Krishna and Suryakumar Yadav were all included in the side.

Talking about the shuffle to the XI, Rohit Sharma said, “We wanted to give some game time to the guys, keeping the bigger picture in mind. Not compromising on how we wanted to play this game. Get in some players who are likely to play in the World Cup.”

He further added, “Axar batted brilliantly but couldn't finish. He showed a lot of character. But credit to the Bangladesh bowlers. Gill's hundred was brilliant. He backs his game, he knows exactly how he wants to play.”

Rohit concluded by talking about Shubman Gill’s brilliant innings, adding, “Pretty clear on what he wants to do for the team. Look at his form over the last year. Pretty solid against the new ball. Works really hard, there's no optional practice for Gill.”
